The Impact of COVID-19 on Obesity and Diabetes in the Asia-Pacific Region

Hosted by NCD Child, in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Pediatric Association (APPA) and Caring and Living as Neighbours (CLAN), the two-day workshop provided an opportunity for individuals in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their advocacy and leadership skills, and collaborate on strategies to keep young people living with obesity and/or diabetes safe during COVID-19.

Day 1 Keynote speaker: Mr. Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Minister of Health, Indonesia

Panel speakers: Dr. Jamal Raza, paediatrition, Executive Director, Sindh Insitute of Child Health & Neonatology, Pakistan; Pat Spellman, broadcaster and marketing executive, and Board Member, Diabetes Foundation Aotearoa, Maori Touch New Zealand; Dr. Louise Baur, Chair, Child & Adolescent Health, University of Sydney, Australia

Day 2 Keynote speaker: Dr. Rekha Harish, Professor of Pediatrics, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Delhi, India

Participants had the opportunity to attend four of the following breakout sessions on both days:

Networking– Participants introduced themselves and met others working in the region.

NCD Champions– Participants heard from Dr. Aman Pulangan, MD, Ph.D., FAAP, FRCPI (Hon.), on leadership opportunities.

 NCD Lab– Participants heard from Dr. Ghaisani Fadiana, MD, NCD Lab Winner, on her diabetes education project.

Running a Successful Social Media Campaign– Participants heard from Dr. Mesty Ariotedjo, Founder and CEO of the child developmental platform- Tentang Anak.

 Voicing Ideas on Obesity– Participants had an opportunity to collaborate with others on ideas to prevent and address obesity in the Asia-Pacific region.

 Voicing Ideas on Diabetes– Participants had an opportunity to collaborate with others on ideas to prevent and address diabetes in the Asia-Pacific region.
