Infectious diseases are still the leading causes of death in developing countries, but as economies grow, Western lifestyle factors such as smoking, high-fat diet, obesity and lack of exercise are emerging public health problems.

In 2014, I took part in a Model United Nations, a sort of educational simulation of the workings of the World Health Organization (WHO) in my home country, Indonesia. In 2016, I wrote a thesis on global health, mentioning the World Health Assembly (WHA). Three years later, to my amazement, I was attending the real WHA.

UN asks are countries on track to achieve SDG 4?

UNESCO projections show countries are off track in meeting their education commitments for 2030

UNESCO projections ahead of the UN High-level Political Forum (link is external) that is to examine progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, show that when all children should be in school, one in six 6 to 17-year-olds will still be excluded in 2030. Projections also show that 40% of children worldwide will fail to complete secondary education, a figure that is forecast to reach 50% in sub-Saharan Africa where the proportion of trained teachers has been declining since 2000.

WHO updates essential medicines and diagnostics lists

WHO has updated its global guidance on medicines and diagnostic tests to address health challenges, prioritize highly effective therapeutics, and improve affordable access with new essential medicines and diagnostics lists. WHO’s Essential Medicines List and List of Essential Diagnostics are core guidance documents that help countries prioritize critical health products that should be widely available and affordable throughout health systems.

Held in late March 2019, over 60 advocates from 24 countries came together for two inspiring days in Sharjah, UAE for the first Global NCD Forum on Children and Youth, organized by the Friends of Cancer Patients and NCD Child.

‘Climate apartheid’: UN expert says human rights may not survive

The world is increasingly at risk of “climate apartheid”, where the rich pay to escape heat and hunger caused by the escalating climate crisis while the rest of the world suffers, a report from a UN human rights expert has said.

Philip Alston, UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, said the impacts of global heating are likely to undermine not only basic rights to life, water, food, and housing for hundreds of millions of people, but also democracy and the rule of law.
